Anton Valavanis, M.D. is Professor and Chairman of the
Department of Neuroradiology and Medical Director of the
Center for Clinical Neurosciences at the University Hospital
of Zurich, Switzerland.
Anton Valavanis was born in Athens, Greece, studied medicine
at the University of Zurich and trained in radiology and
neuroradiology at the University Hospital of Zurich. In 1977
he started developing the emerging field of interventional
neuroradiology and in 1985 he introduced MR-neuroimaging
at the University Hospital of Zurich.
For more than 20 years he was a close collaborator of the pioneer microneurosurgeon
Professor Gazi M. Yaşargil and of the pioneer skull base microsurgeon Professor
Ugo Fisch.
His main clinical interests concern the endovascular treatment of AVM's of the
CNS, intracranial aneurysms, stroke and hypervascular skull base tumors. His
personal experience in these fields amounts to 7'000 treated patients.
His research focuses on the refinement of neuroendovascular concepts and
techniques and on the investigation of the architectonic organization of the brain
with advanced neuroimaging techniques.
Dr. Valavanis has over 200 publications in scientific journals and chapters in books.
He served as President of the World Federation of Neuroradiological Societies, of
the Swiss Society of Neuroradiology and was Editor-in-Chief of "Neuroradiology".
He holds several honorary memberships of scientific societies around the world.
